Contractors & Trades

Website Design for Contractors and Trades in South Africa

We build websites for South African contractors, builders, renovators and specialist trades that turn searches into WhatsApp enquiries. Your services, service areas, credentials and real completed jobs — set out so that when a homeowner or site manager asks their phone who to call, your name comes up — on Google, on Maps and in AI answers.

Word of Mouth Is Moving Online — and Into AI

Most good contractors grew on referrals. RLD Interiors, a Durban renovation company, built twenty years of work that way — with no website at all. But customers now check a contractor online before they call, even when a friend recommended them. Increasingly, some skip the search results entirely and ask ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews: "Who does kitchen renovations in Umhlanga?" If your business isn't described clearly online, the assistant recommends someone whose business is.

What Customers Check Before They Call

Homeowners and commercial clients look for different things. A contractor website has to satisfy both.

Homeowners

  • Photos of real jobs — not stock images
  • Recent Google reviews from people nearby
  • Whether you work in their suburb
  • Call-out fees and rough price ranges
  • How fast you respond, and a WhatsApp button

Developers and commercial clients

  • Your CIDB grade and class of works, for public-sector and larger commercial tenders
  • NHBRC registration, if you build new homes
  • Insurance, safety file and compliance certificates
  • Capacity: team size, equipment and concurrent projects
  • Completed projects of a similar size and type
  • A named contact for tenders and quotations

Trades We Build For

Every trade has its own questions and its own credentials. We build the pages your customers actually look for — and show the registrations that prove you're legitimate.

Builders and renovation contractors

A page per service — kitchens, bathrooms, extensions, full renovations — with a gallery of real completed jobs, the suburbs you work in and how quotes and site visits work.

Customers ask AI: "Who does bathroom renovations in Durban North, and how long does a full remodel take?"

Home builders: NHBRC registration. Public-sector work: your CIDB grade and class of works.

Electricians

Fault finding, compliance certificates, DB board upgrades, backup power and solar — each explained with typical call-out times and what homeowners need to prepare.

Customers ask AI: "Which registered electrician near Randburg can issue a CoC for a house sale this week?"

Say that you are registered with the Department of Employment and Labour and can issue an electrical Certificate of Compliance (CoC).

Plumbers

Burst pipes, geysers, blocked drains and renovations — with emergency availability stated plainly, service areas listed and call-out fees explained up front.

Customers ask AI: "Is there a PIRB-registered plumber in Centurion who replaces geysers on weekends?"

Show your PIRB registration and that you can issue plumbing Certificates of Compliance.

Solar installers

System sizes you install, the brands you work with, how you handle sizing and municipal registration, and before-and-after examples with the load-shedding problem each system solved.

Customers ask AI: "Which solar installers in Pretoria East size systems to beat load-shedding, and are they PV GreenCard certified?"

Show PV GreenCard certification if you hold it, and the registered electrician who signs off installations.

HVAC and refrigeration

Installation, servicing and maintenance contracts for homes and commercial buildings, the equipment brands you are accredited for, and response times for breakdowns.

Customers ask AI: "Who services commercial air-conditioning in Sandton with a same-day breakdown response?"

List manufacturer accreditations and the warranties you can offer.

Roofing, waterproofing and painting

Services by roof type and problem, seasonal advice, guarantees on workmanship, and photo evidence from real jobs — the details homeowners compare before calling.

Customers ask AI: "Which roofing company in Cape Town fixes leaks before winter and guarantees its work?"

State your workmanship guarantee, insurance cover and any product-manufacturer approvals.

Sources: NHBRC, PIRB, Department of Employment and Labour on electrical CoCs, PV GreenCard.

Built for WhatsApp and Phones

Your customers find you on their phones and want to message, not fill in a long form.

Every page leads to a conversation

  • WhatsApp and call buttons on every page, one tap on mobile
  • A short quote form that opens WhatsApp with the job details filled in
  • Photo-friendly: customers can send you pictures of the problem straight away

Fast on prepaid data

  • Pages that load quickly on patchy mobile connections
  • Compressed photo galleries that don't eat data
  • Large buttons and readable text on budget phones

Found on Google, Maps and AI Assistants

Local customers find contractors in three places: Google's results, the map pack and, increasingly, AI assistants. All three draw on the same signals — consistent business details, genuine reviews, clear service and area pages, and structured data. Get those right once and they work everywhere.

Google Business Profile and reviews

For local trades, your Google Business Profile drives Maps visibility. We connect it to your website with matching business details and service areas, and set up a simple review-request link.

Service-area pages done properly

A few strong pages for the areas you really serve, each with local projects and details — not hundreds of copy-paste suburb pages that Google treats as spam.

Structured data for your trade

Search engines have specific business types for trades — Plumber, Electrician, RoofingContractor, GeneralContractor and more. We describe your business, services and areas with the right one.

Readable by AI crawlers

Fully server-rendered pages and a deliberate crawler policy, so AI assistants can read your services and areas — and recommend you when someone asks who to call.

Case Study: RLD Interiors

RLD Interiors & Home Renovations had twenty years of experience across KwaZulu-Natal and no online presence at all. We built their site from scratch: nine services from kitchens and bathrooms to plumbing and electrical, eight service areas, a filterable gallery of completed projects, and a WhatsApp-first enquiry flow — because in KwaZulu-Natal, WhatsApp is how customers contact contractors. Every page is server-rendered on Cloudflare's edge network with 11 structured-data schemas, security headers and AI crawler controls built in.

Why Pay More Than a R5,000 Template?

Sometimes you shouldn't. If you only need a phone number and a few photos online, a cheap template or a good Google Business Profile may be enough. A search-ready site is worth it when you want the site itself to bring in work.

A typical template site

  • One services page listing everything you do
  • Stock photos and generic copy shared with other templates
  • Little or no structured data, and slow page builders
  • Hard for Google — and AI assistants — to tell what you do and where

An SEO & AI search-ready site

  • A page for each service you want to be found for
  • Your real jobs, reviews, credentials and service areas
  • Structured data, fast pages and AI crawler access built in
  • WhatsApp enquiries tracked so you can see what it earns

For most contractors, one extra renovation, installation or commercial contract covers the cost of the site. Already have a website? A GEO upgrade from R12,500 may be all you need. See our website cost guide for full South African price ranges.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a website for a contractor cost in South Africa?

Template sites for tradespeople start from a few thousand rand once-off, or a few hundred rand a month on a rental plan. Our SEO and AI search-ready contractor websites start from R25,000, and a GEO upgrade of an existing site starts from R12,500. The difference is in how many jobs the site brings in, not only how it looks.

Do I need a website if most of my work comes from referrals?

Referrals still happen — but the person you were referred to usually looks you up before they call. If they can't find you, or find a Facebook page with no recent work, the referral often goes to someone else. A website with real projects, reviews and a WhatsApp button turns a referral into an enquiry.

Should I show prices or call-out fees on my website?

Showing your call-out fee and typical price ranges for common jobs filters out price shoppers and builds trust with serious customers. AI assistants also answer "how much does it cost" questions, and a clear range on your site gives them something accurate to quote instead of a competitor's figure.

Should I create a separate page for every suburb I work in?

Only where you have something genuinely different to say — local projects, specific services or response times for that area. Hundreds of near-identical suburb pages are treated by Google as doorway pages and can hurt the whole site. We build a small number of strong area pages backed by real work in each area.

How do I get more Google reviews?

Ask every happy customer at the moment the job is finished, and make it easy with a short link sent by WhatsApp. Reply to every review, good or bad. We link your Google Business Profile reviews to your website so the two reinforce each other.

Which credentials should a contractor show on their website?

Whatever applies to your trade: CIDB grading for public-sector construction, NHBRC registration for home builders, PIRB registration for plumbers, Department of Employment and Labour registration for electricians who issue compliance certificates, and PV GreenCard for solar installers — plus insurance and your workmanship guarantee.

Can ChatGPT or Google's AI recommend my building or trade business?

Yes — for local questions such as "who fixes geysers in Bryanston", AI assistants lean heavily on local signals: your Google Business Profile, the number and recency of reviews, and whether your website names the suburbs you serve and the jobs you do. A one-page site with only a phone number gives them nothing to go on.
